Statement on the Passion Translation

Over the past few months, the elders' attention has been drawn to concerns raised by scholars and theologians regarding the accuracy of The Passion Translation (TPT). These scholars, skilled in Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek, have highlighted basic errors in translation and unjustifiable additions into the text which change the fundamental meaning.

The claims by Brian Simmons, the author of TPT, of how he received special insights into these ancient languages, and the fact that he is not recognised as a scholar in these languages, adds to these concerns. His teaching from TPT changes the basic Christian teaching regarding the church, the apostle, prophet, evangelist, pastor and teacher roles, the return of Jesus, and more. This teaching leads to error in belief, which is called heresy.

We, the elders, agree that The Passion Translation will not be used in any public or group setting within Bentley Baptist Church. It will not be used to preach or teach from nor used in Life Groups or prayer meetings.

As elders of the church, and for the reasons stated above, we would not recommend reading or using TPT at all. However, if you choose to use The Passion Translation personally, be aware this is an inaccurate paraphrase which may lead to error - it is not a translation. Check the accuracy of what you read with a translation such as the NIV, NLT or ESV.
